Dr Kunal Verma
CARDIAC GENETICIST
Alfred Health and Monash Health

Dr Kunal Verma is Australia’s only dual-accredited clinical geneticist and cardiologist. Dr Verma provides specialised assessment and care for patients with genetic (inherited) conditions and their families, and has unique expertise in the diagnosis and care of individuals with inherited heart conditions.

Dr Sean Tan
CARDIOLOGIST (NON-INVASIVE IMAGING)
Victorian Heart Hospital (Monash Health)

Dr Sean Tan is a general and academic cardiologist. He is interested in all aspects of cardiology, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, and cardiac risk assessment. He also has a keen interest in the prevention of cardiovascular disease, in particular the emerging field of Cardio-Oncology which focuses on the cardiovascular health of patients with cancer.

Sean graduated from Monash University in 2014 with First Class Honours and completed his cardiology training at MonashHeart, Frankston Hospital and Bendigo Hospital. During his training, he was awarded the John Burgess Award for Clinical Excellence at Monash Health.

Sean is currently undertaking a PhD through Monash University and the Victorian Heart Hospital, evaluating cardiovascular risk identification and prevention in patients treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors for cancer. He is the recipient of the prestigious National Health and Medical Research Council and National Heart Foundation joint postgraduate scholarship and has also been recognised with an Emerging Researcher Fellowship and a Clinical Academic Fellowship from Monash Health.

Sean is also an avid educator and is the Monash University Medical Student Program Advisor for the Victorian Heart Hospital. He was twice awarded the Monash University Excellence in Clinical Supervision Award for medical student teaching in 2020 and 2022. Outside of work, Sean enjoys travelling and spending time with his family. He is a passionate sports fan and is an avid Liverpool FC supporter.

Dr Phillip Ngu

Dr Ngu is an Imaging Cardiologist who specialises in cardiac imaging and general cardiology. He completed his medical degree with Honours at Monash University in 2007, undertook his residency and cardiology training at the Alfred and Monash hospitals, and completed his cardiac imaging fellowship at the Alfred Hospital in 2017. Phillip’s passion is in using multi-modality imaging to better understand cardiac disease  and improve patient outcomes.  His particular imaging interests are in echocardiography (resting, stress and transoesophageal) , CT coronary angiography and cardiac MRI.

Dr Joseph O’Brien
CARDIOLOGIST (GENERAL AND INTERVENTIONAL)

Dr Joseph O’Brien is a General Cardiologist and Interventional Cardiology Fellow living in Melbourne, currently working at the Victorian Heart Hospital (Monash Health Heart). He completed his internship in Bendigo, a regional Victorian centre, and his Basic Physician Training across St Vincent’s and Austin Health. Prior to commencing Cardiology, he underwent a specialist fellowship in Pulmonary Hypertension. His Cardiology Advanced Training was fulfilled through Eastern, Austin, and Barwon Health networks.

Joe is the co-author of ‘The Junior Doctor Survival Guide’ with Dr Paul Watson, a medical textbook they wrote whilst working as residents. In addition to publishing a textbook, he has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and abstracts in prestigious national and overseas journals, and presented his work in an international forum. He is passionate about teaching and the issue of safe practice for junior doctors and has an Adjunct Lecturer role with Monash University. Joe graduated with an MBBS and BMedSc(Hons) from Monash University through their inaugural Extended Rural Cohort program, and has a Graduate Certificate in Health Professional Education from the University of Melbourne.

Joe's areas of special interest  include acute coronary syndrome, chest pain, and coronary microvascular dysfunction, pulmonary hypertension and atrial fibrillation. Away from the hospital,  Joe enjoys travelling widely and does his best to squeeze in at least two SCUBA dives per year.

Dr Hashrul Rashid
CARDIOLOGIST (INTERVENTIONAL)
Northern Health

Dr Hashrul Rashid, an adjunct senior lecturer at Monash University, is an interventional and CT imaging cardiologist based in Melbourne. Hash graduated from Monash University with honours and later completed his cardiology fellowships at Monash Health and St. Thomas’ Hospital in London. During his clinical training, Hash was awarded the RACP Australian Trainee of the Year and the ANZET Geoff Mews Fellow’s Prize.

His research, which earned him the Mollie Holman Medal for the highest-ranked PhD thesis at Monash University, has been recognised with various national and international awards. These include the TCT Asia Pacific Best Young Scientist award and the prestigious Australian cardiology trifecta (ANZET Early Career Research Prize, CSANZ Cardiac Imaging Prize, and RACP Trainee Research Award). He was also a first runner-up finalist for the ACC, AHA, EuroPCR, and SCCT Young Investigator awards.

Dr Anoop Koshy
CARDIOLOGIST (INTERVENTIONAL AND STRUCTURAL)
The Royal Melbourne Hospital & Austin Health

Dr Anoop Koshy is an Interventional, Structural and General Cardiologist based at Warringal Hospital, The Austin Hospital and Royal Melbourne Hospital. After completing his training in General Cardiology training at Eastern Health and Monash Heart in 2017, he undertook four years of advanced sub-specialisation in Interventional and Structural Heart Interventions at Austin Health and at the prestigious Mount Sinai Medical Centre in New York.

Dr Koshy is the Head of Cardiac Services for the Victorian Liver Transplant Unit at Austin Health, and is a dedicated medical researcher with over 100 publications in some of the world's top cardiology journals and book chapters in coronary and structural heart disease.

Dr Laila Khan

The Canberra Hospital and National Capital Private Hospital

Dr Khan undertook Cardiology Advanced Training at The Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane and subsequently completed an Advanced Echocardiography Fellowship at Gold Coast University Hospital. Dr Khan was the inaugural Advanced Echo Fellow at Gold Coast University Hospital and won the 14th Echo Hong Kong Young Cardiologists/Fellow Echo Case Competition in 2023.

Dr Samer Noaman
Cardiologist
Western Health, Alfred Health and Epworth Health

Dr Noaman completed his cardiology training at Western Health in Victoria and is currently undertaking a PhD through the University of Melbourne investigating reperfusion injury aiming to reduce infarct size in STEMI via a randomised clinical trial and the role of coronary microcirculation in chest pain syndromes. Samer currently holds posts at Western Health, Alfred Health and Epworth Health. He has a particular interest in interventional cardiology and acute coronary syndromes and has published in multiple peer-reviewed journals. He was the winner of the 2020 Geoff Mews Memorial Fellows’ Prize.

Dr. Omar Al-Mukhtar

Dr Al-Mukhtar is a cardiologist based in Melbourne, Victoria. Omar completed his cardiology training through Western Health and Austin Health and holds a Masters degree in Clinical Trials Research from the University of Sydney. He has a special interest in Interventional Cardiology and completed a fellowship in coronary percutaneous interventions in 2021. Currently, Omar holds posts at Western Health, Northern Health and Epworth Health and completed a two year fellowship in structural heart interventions at Monash Heart / Victorian Heart Hospital 2022/2023. Omar has published research in both Australian and international journals and has won the Robert Newman Prize for best research at Western Health 2019 and is a prize finalist for best research in preventative cardiology at the Cardiac Society 2021 Annual meeting.
